Arlington police investigate after officer fatally shoots armed driver during traffic stop

Arlington, Texas – A traffic stop on Interstate 20 took a tragic turn Thursday afternoon, resulting in the death of an armed driver identified by Arlington police as Sean Daniel McKay. The 49-year-old was pulled over by an Arlington officer due to erratic driving across lanes on I-20, sparking a series of events that led to the fatal shooting.

During the stop, police stated that McKay was asked to turn off his vehicle and exit, but he reportedly refused both requests. The situation escalated when the officer observed McKay holding a handgun. Despite repeated commands to drop the weapon, McKay did not comply, leading to the officer discharging “several” shots, which ultimately resulted in McKay being hit and later dying from his injuries at a hospital.

The Arlington Police Department has announced that an internal affairs investigation will assess whether the officer adhered to proper procedures during the incident. Simultaneously, a homicide investigation will examine the entire sequence of events.

Following department policy, the officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave. The department has also confirmed that the officer was equipped with a body camera at the time of the incident. Plans to release the body camera footage early next week have been made public, which will likely provide further clarity on the circumstances leading up to the shooting.
