FWISD Art Teachers Help With Tuskegee Airmen Mural
Around 770 volunteers helped with the project
Fort Worth ISD art teachers were among the hundreds of volunteers who came together to paint a mural honoring the Tuskegee Airmen.
The Tuskegee Airmen were the first Black military aviators in the U.S. Army Air Corps. The courageous group flew more than 15,000 individual sorties in Europe and North Africa during World War II.
Two Tuskegee Airmen were inducted into the Fort Worth ISD Wall of Fame in 2009. Robert T. McDaniel was valedictorian and president of I.M. Terrell High School’s class of 1940. He flew the B-25 bomber and rose to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. Fellow I.M. Terrell alumnus Capt. Claude Platte served as a flight instructor during the war.
Community volunteers gathered at Emanuel L. Young American Legion Post 838 to create the inspiring mural to honor the airmen’s invaluable service to the country.
FWISD extends our deepest gratitude to all the volunteers, which included TCU students, Fort Worth Police Officers, members from Post 569 and Mansfield, and, most importantly, the families from the neighborhood who came together. Through community efforts, volunteers created a joyful mural celebrating the men and women who have and who continue to serve our country. Thank you for your dedication and support.
