Abilene man receives 15 year federal sentence after shooting at police during chase

Fort Worth, Texas – A previously convicted felon who fired shots at Abilene police officers after a dangerous pursuit through city streets has been sentenced to a lengthy federal prison term. Federal officials announced that Austin Tabor Heuermann, 32, of Abilene, Texas, will spend the next 15 years behind bars following the violent incident.

The sentence was announced by United States Attorney for the Northern District of Texas Ryan Raybould. Heuermann was indicted by a federal grand jury in September 2025 on a charge of possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. He later pleaded guilty to the charge in November 2025.

On March 6, 2026, United States District Judge James Wesley Hendrix sentenced Heuermann to 180 months in federal prison. In addition to the prison term, the judge ordered him to pay $4,019.26 in restitution.

High Speed Chase Leads to Armed Standoff

Court records show the case began on August 13, 2025, at approximately 3:40 p.m. when Abilene Police Department officers attempted to stop Heuermann for a traffic violation. Authorities also discovered that he had an outstanding state warrant at the time.

Instead of pulling over, Heuermann fled from officers, sparking a dangerous pursuit through the city. During the chase, investigators say he drove through multiple stop signs and sped toward areas where school zones were active.

Because of the extreme danger posed to the public, officers made the decision to stop pursuing the vehicle.

Not long afterward, officers located Heuermann’s vehicle abandoned and hidden under a tarp.

Investigators soon tracked him to a home in another part of Abilene.

Police surrounded the residence and instructed the people inside to exit the house. Several occupants complied and left the home safely. However, Heuermann refused to come out.

Shots Fired at Officers

According to evidence presented in court, the situation quickly escalated.

Seconds after the last person exited the residence, Heuermann fired a shot from inside the house toward the outside. Officers reported seeing debris from the wall directly in front of them fly into the air, indicating the bullet had struck near their position.

Officers immediately retreated for safety, and the Abilene Police Department’s Special Weapons and Tactics team was called to the scene.

The standoff lasted for several hours as more than 10 SWAT members and trained negotiators attempted to persuade Heuermann to surrender peacefully. Officers remained positioned outside the home using an armored SWAT Bearcat vehicle for protection.

However, Heuermann continued to refuse commands from officers.

At one point, he opened the front door of the home, looked outside, and then closed it again. Moments later, he opened the door a second time.

This time, investigators say he pointed a firearm toward the armored vehicle and fired a shot at the Bearcat. The bullet struck and partially shattered the windshield above the driver’s position.

Despite the violence, officers maintained their positions and continued negotiations.

Eventually, Heuermann surrendered to authorities.

After his arrest, officers entered the residence and discovered a stolen grey Century Arms Canik 9mm pistol inside the home. Investigators also recovered spent shell casings from the floor.

During court proceedings, Heuermann admitted that he was a convicted felon and that he possessed and fired the firearm during the standoff.

The investigation was carried out by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Abilene Resident Agency within the Dallas Field Office, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives office in Fort Worth, and the Abilene Police Department.

Assistant United States Attorney Jennifer Schrauth prosecuted the case.
