Governor Greg Abbott orders expanded safety measures to counter cartel threats near Texas border

Austin, Texas – In response to rising violence tied to drug cartels in Mexico and growing concerns about potential spillover threats, Texas officials are strengthening security efforts along the border and across the state. Governor Greg Abbott directed the Texas Department of Public Safety to expand homeland security and public safety operations, citing risks posed to civilians and national security.

The move comes amid escalating cartel violence in parts of Mexico, where ongoing clashes, road blockages, and criminal activity have heightened safety concerns for travelers and border communities.

Expanded Security Operations Along the Border

“Mexican drug cartels pose a significant threat to public safety and national security,” said Governor Abbott. “By increasing proactive efforts to defend against cartel violence, Texas will continue to utilize every tool and strategy to protect our state and our nation. We will not cower to criminals who impose terror on our fellow Texans and Americans.”

Under the governor’s directive, the Department of Public Safety will deploy additional resources to enhance surveillance, enforcement, and rapid response capabilities. Texas Highway Patrol troopers, Texas Rangers, the Criminal Investigations Division, and the Special Operations Group will surge personnel to border regions to detect, interdict, and apprehend criminal activity and prevent transnational threats from crossing into Texas communities.

Authorities will also increase operations conducted by the Tactical Marine Unit and the Aircraft Operations Division. These units will focus on monitoring waterways and aerial corridors along the border to detect suspicious movement and assist in apprehensions.

Monitoring Threats and Supporting Public Safety

State officials are activating additional personnel from the Homeland Security Division and the Texas Fusion Center to monitor social media and suspicious activity reports around the clock. This enhanced monitoring is intended to provide early warning of potential threats and allow rapid coordination with law enforcement partners.

Governor Abbott also urged Texans currently traveling in Mexico — and those with family or friends visiting there — to remain alert and closely follow warnings issued by the U.S. Department of State. Officials cautioned that security operations and criminal activity in Mexico may lead to road closures and other disruptions.

Texans who need immediate assistance can contact the U.S. Department of State at 1-202-501-4444 if calling from outside the United States or 1-888-407-4747 from within the country. Individuals may also reach the Texas Fusion Center at 1-844-927-0521 to report suspicious activity.

State leaders say the enhanced security posture reflects an ongoing commitment to protect residents and maintain safety amid evolving threats along the southern border. By increasing coordination, surveillance, and enforcement presence, Texas officials aim to deter criminal activity and respond quickly to emerging risks.
