Tarrant County hosts free prostate cancer screening and education event in Fort Worth

Fort Worth, Texas – Tarrant County leaders are inviting the community to take part in a free health event focused on awareness, prevention, and early detection of prostate cancer. Tarrant County Commissioner Roderick Miles, Jr. and The Honorable Roy Charles Brooks will host the 12th Annual Healthy Lives Matter Prostate Cancer Education and Screening Event on Saturday, February 28, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Moncrief Cancer Institute, located at 400 W. Magnolia Avenue in Fort Worth.

The annual event is designed to increase awareness about prostate cancer and provide free Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) screenings for men of all ages. Community members are encouraged to register in advance at www.tarrantcountytx.gov/prostateevent.

Raising awareness and saving lives

Health officials emphasize the importance of prostate cancer awareness and early detection. According to the American Cancer Society, more than 333,000 men in the United States are expected to be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year.

Certain groups face a higher risk. Men of color over age 45 and men who have a first-degree relative diagnosed with prostate cancer are twice as likely to develop the disease. African American men, in particular, face a significantly higher risk, as they are more likely to develop prostate cancer than Caucasian men and are nearly twice as likely to die from it.

A key component of the event is PSA screening, a simple blood test used to measure the level of prostate-specific antigen in the blood. PSA is a protein produced by the prostate gland, and elevated levels may serve as an early warning sign of prostate cancer. Health experts stress that early detection is critical and can save lives by allowing treatment to begin before the disease progresses.

The event will also provide educational resources to help men better understand risk factors, screening options, and steps they can take to protect their health.

Community support and accessible care

Organizers aim to make the event welcoming and accessible to all attendees. A continental breakfast and lunch will be provided, creating a supportive environment where participants can learn and receive screenings without financial barriers.

The Healthy Lives Matter initiative continues to focus on outreach and prevention, particularly in communities that face higher risks and disparities in health outcomes. By offering free screenings and educational resources, the event seeks to empower men to take proactive steps toward protecting their health.

Residents seeking additional information may call (817) 370-4500 or (817) 531-5600. Community members can also contact Leon Polk, Community Outreach Coordinator, at 817-370-4500 or [email protected].

With prostate cancer remaining one of the most common cancers among men, organizers hope the event will encourage early screening and increase awareness throughout Tarrant County.
