Governor Greg Abbott says Texas military installations generate nearly $149 billion and support more than 628,000 jobs
Austin, Texas – Governor Greg Abbott has announced the results of a new study showing the significant economic impact that United States military installations continue to have across Texas, highlighting their importance to both national defense and the state’s economy.
According to the study, military installations in Texas contribute an estimated $148.8 billion in economic output while supporting 628,884 direct and indirect jobs statewide during the 2025-2026 period.
The findings also show that Texas military installations directly employ 212,524 people, reflecting the major role military facilities play as employers in communities throughout the state.
Governor Abbott said Texas has a long history of supporting the nation’s armed forces and remains committed to maintaining that partnership.
“The tradition of military service is long in our great state,” said Governor Abbott. “Texas is proud to be home to 15 major U.S. military installations and the Army Transformation and Training Command headquarters. Essential to the defense of our nation, each installation also serves as a major local employer and provides tremendous value to communities across Texas. Texas is proud to partner with our military communities to ensure our state remains the best home for the men and women of the greatest military in the world.”
Study highlights broad economic impact across Texas
The report examined the economic activity generated by people directly connected to military installations throughout Texas.
That analysis included active-duty service members, civilian employees, contractors, military dependents, and other individuals directly affiliated with military facilities across the state.
Officials said the study demonstrates that the benefits of military installations extend well beyond the bases themselves, supporting businesses, local economies, and employment throughout surrounding communities.
Texas is currently home to 15 major United States military installations as well as the Army Transformation and Training Command headquarters, making the state one of the nation’s leading military centers.
State officials also highlighted the work of the Texas Military Preparedness Commission, which operates within the Office of the Governor.
The commission advises both the governor and the Texas Legislature on defense-related issues while working to strengthen the long-term future of military installations across the state.
Part of its mission includes helping Texas prepare for any future Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) decisions that could affect military facilities.
The commission also works closely with military communities to improve infrastructure, strengthen resiliency, and support mission readiness while helping ensure that Texas remains an attractive location for military operations.
According to state leaders, these ongoing efforts are intended to reinforce Texas’ position as one of the country’s leading homes for military missions, service members, veterans, and military families while continuing to deliver substantial economic benefits to communities across the state.
